Things to Avoid When Wearing Human Hair

Wigs offer people the opportunity to change their hairstyles as frequently as they change their clothes, without damaging their natural hair. Wigs come in various styles and colors. Likewise, wigs are made from different materials. Some are made from synthetic fibers, while others are made from real human hair. Real human hair presents a more natural hair look than synthetic wigs, hence they are much more expensive and requires more maintenance to prolong their life expectancy.

There is always a chance that you may make a mistake in human hair care routine. To make every penny you spent worth, it’s definitely necessary to get yourself acquaintance with some common mistakes that are easily made about human hair wigs or extensions. Below are common hair maintenance mistakes and how to avoid them:

Excessive Use of Hair Care Products

To achieve a fabulous hairdo that looks realistic or keep the hair in good condition,  the use of a few hair products is indispensable. However, the biggest mistake about caring for human hair is using too much products. Those hair products along with make up and pollutants from the surroundings will become buildup on the hair, which will dry out the hair and cause frizz or even breakage. The more products you use, the higher the likelihood you’ll need to wash the hair to remove excess product build-up. To much washing will certainly make the hair look dull and shorten its lifespan.

Failure to detangle the hair

When speaking of wigs, whether human hair or synthetic wigs, shedding issue cannot be ignored. No one likes a wig that sheds crazy. You need to find the reason before you try to solve the shedding problem. One of the reason is you are using the wrong way to detangle the human hair. As long as you wear the wig or extension on your head, the hair will get tangled or even turn to knots eventually if you do not brush the hair correctly. The knots can subsequently contribute to split ends or damage to the hair. So always remember to use a detangling brush or comb to detangle the hair when it’s necessary.

Excessive use of heat styling tools

Heat styling tools are great for giving your hair that perfect look, but they can also leave your hair fried and frizzled. Human hair contains keratin proteins and hydrogen bonds. When you use heat styling tools, such as curling irons, flat irons, tongs or blow dryers, they strip your hair of its natural oils and proteins by breaking down its hydrogen bonds. They change your hair texture in order to achieve straightness, curliness or sleekness. Frequent heat styling contributes to irregular texture and strands that are more prone to breakage. So to protect your human hair, reduce heat styling as much as you can. If you do need heat styling, always use a protection spray before that.

Bad bedtime habits

What does your nighttime regimen look like? Take a shower, remove your makeup and skin care. Then what about your hair? It’s definitely not a wise choice to leave it alone. Bedtime hair care and wig maintenance are just as critical as daytime human hair care. If not necessary, take the wig off every night and put it on the wig head  or stand. Sleeping with wigs will undoubtedly damage the hair and lead to tangles, which takes you more time to detangle it. Remember to detangle the hair and make it ready for next day wear. If the hair is not removable like box braids, grab a satin pillow case to protect the hair from tangling.

Improper washing and drying behavior

Improper washing and drying habits will also shorten the lifespan of your human hair wigs or extension. Always remember to detangle the hair first before you start washing. Use a wide-toothed comb and start at the ends to avoid hair loss. Always use shampoo and conditioner that are moisture-rich and specially designed for wigs to keep the hair soft, moisturized and shiny. Do not brush your hair while it’s wet, instead, use your own fingers to evenly distribute the shampoo and conditioner to avoid hair breakage. If possible, it’s not suggested to use blow dryer and heat on human hair wigs. You’d better hang your wig on a wig stand to air dry after gently blotting with a towel. Make sure the hair is completely dry before you wear it.

In a word, if your goal is to keep your human hair in good shape and always look vibrant and healthy, frequent maintenance and care are necessary. Looking glamorous requires efforts. Hope these tips are useful and help prolong the service life of your wigs and extensions. What’s your maintenance tips or advices?
